Insync’s web hosting division merges with Diadem Technologies

Monday, October 17th, 2011

We are pleased to announce the successful merger of ewebplanet.in, a successful web hosting and development provider based in Kolkata with Diadem Technologies Pvt. Ltd. Ewebplanet.in has been a division of Insync Tech Fin Solutions Ltd., which was founded by Mr. Atul Kumar in 2006 and has enjoyed rapid growth since its inception.

As the company is now focussed on developing their own SAP oriented products and solutions (SBOeConnect and SBOeCube), they had decided to hive off their web hosting division to a provider which shared the same vision and values and would be able to take good care of their clients and manage them effectively. After a series of amicable discussions with Mr. Atul Gupta, Insync decided to migrate its hosting services and clients to our network which would enable us to start managing their hosting services and clients, effective from 15 Oct 2011.

I am confident that this merger would enable us to provide the existing clients of ewebplanet.in with enhanced hosting features and upgrade their hosting plans to new features and services as we release them to our clients. To begin with, all accounts would be migrated to the new version of the Plesk Control Panel 10.3 which has a new streamlined interface and extensive features for effective management of client accounts and services. Customers can also use the 1-click installer for installing third part apps (wordpress, joomla, etc.) without going through the technical process of installing these applications on their accounts.

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all clients and partners of  ewebplanet.in to Diadem Technologies and I hope that we can continue to serve and provide you with industry leading hosting services in the days ahead.

I would also like to thank our clients, partners and our committed support staff for their continued support and this merger would further consolidate our presence as a leading web hosting provider in this region with a strong presence in the SME segment.

2010 – The Year in Review

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

As 2010 finally comes to a close, here is a good time for all of us to take a stock of our hits and misses and plan ahead for the next year. I am pretty sure all of us have had some unique experiences to share and from an organisation perspective, I am summing up some of the milestones which we were able to reach this year:

  • Diadem website revamp: We were able to redo our very own website, www.diadem.co.in and launch it online.
  • New shared hosting plans: We overhauled our shared hosting plans for windows and linux and upgraded our clients to take benefit of the enhanced features available.
  • Launch of our VPS Hosting Plans: We achieved a significant milestone this year by launching our VPS hosting plans and subsequently upgrading the server hardware, automating backup and being able to provide custom solutions for a growing group of clients, who are able to run their mission critical apps within their own dedicated server environment at costs, which are a fraction of  a dedicated server.
  • Newsletters: As part of my client interaction initiatives, I am now sending out regular e-newsletters to our clients to keep them abreast on our current happenings and upcoming trends in the industry. This effort has been well received and the efforts appreciated by our clients.
  • Dedicated Server Management Module: Our very own server management module is on the verge of being released and would allow our dedicated and VPS clients to being able to manage and communicate more effectively through this web based application. Stay tuned for more details on this soon.

Apart from the above, we were able to enhance our server hardware, software and generally streamline our operations to deliver over 99.5% service uptime to our clients. Though we also have had our fair share of misses and non starters to contend with this year, we have quite a few  services planned for the future and I feel pretty good to conclude this year on a high note. On behalf of our entire crew @ Diadem, we wish you continued success for the  year ahead and hope you make the most of it as well!

ThePlanet merger with Softlayer – A positive impact for the web hosting industry?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Bigger, Better, Badder. This is the punchline of the new Softlayer which has completed the merger ThePlanet with itself after months of planning and action. Anyone who is an active web hosting provider in India or abroad must have heard news of  ThePlanet merging with Softlayer which in our industry is equivalent to two 800 pound gorillas joining forces and becoming a single 1600 pound giant! Both ThePlanet and Softlayer are rated amongst the top 10 datacenter providers globally and together they will probably be just behind Rackspace in terms of the servers hosted on their network.

What comes as a bigger surprise is that inspite Softlayer being smaller than ThePlanet in terms of the number of servers hosted and revenues generated, they are taking over ThePlanet as the VC firm GI Partners, which has had a controlling stake in both these companies prior to their merger, recognises the advanced networking, support and automation capabilities which has made Softlayer amongst the fastest growing datacenter providers globally.

Our association with Softlayer has been from the middle of 2006 from the time they had a single datacenter in Dallas, hosting about a  thousand servers on their network. Having being a client of  ThePlanet for a couple of years prior to working with SL, things started going downhill in terms of support and network outages after their COO, Lance Crosby pulled out and started Softlayer alongwith a bunch of colleagues from his previous organisation.  We had reviewed other providers including SoftLayer and I am glad we ultimately decided to go with Softlayer and have continued to use them as our exclusive provider of virtual datacenter services.

In my view, following are the key aspects which sets Softlayer apart from the rest of the crowd:

  • Network Uptime: Inspite of them growing rapidly into multiple datacenters with growing complexity of managing a large interconnected network, they have being able to deliver top notch network performance and uptime. For a web hosting provider, this is a primary requirement.
  • Proactive Support: Their support team has been consistent and extremely proactive in resolving issues, which most datacenter providers would shirk responsibility from. Needless to say, Softlayer continues to impress with their responsiveness and willingness to resolve support issues.
  • Automation: Before Softlayer, most providers would take 24-48 hrs to make your server come online. They redefined the industry by delivering dedicated servers within 4 hours or less. This helped hosting providers in delivering servers on demand to their client without having to maintain any inventory at their end.
  • Range of Services: In the last couple of years, the hosting industry has been overloaded with new technologies and innovations, which include Virtualisation, Cloud Hosting, CDN Services, Grid Computing, iSCSI Storage to name a few. Softlayer has been on top of most such innovations and has attempted to provide this as an on demand service to its clients with a low usage cost.

While Softlayer may have had been successful in the past, it does not in anyway guarantee its future success, especially after  its merger with ThePlanet. The Planet has a different approach to datacenter servces, was more focussed on providing collocation services and it might be difficult to make them follow the Softlayer way of doing things. Also, I am sure there would be some erosion of clients from the old Planet as Softlayer would not be offering colocation services and would prefer their model of virtual datacenter services which might not suit all clients of ThePlanet.

While it could be anybody’s guess in whether the merged entity can dominate the datacenter hosting industry or get overtaken by another ‘Softlayer’ in the making, I do hope that they are able to offer services which would make outsourced server hosting a no-brainer for SME’s in India, who prefer to host their web and application servers within their premises for reasons of ‘sharing their internet access cost’ and ‘physical access to their servers’ but incurring substantial infrastructure and maintenance costs in the process.

SA-SCSI Storage with RAID – Now Available on our VPS Servers

Monday, August 30th, 2010

In line with our sustained efforts in providing our VPS clients with industry leading hardware and software options, we have upgraded the HDDs on our VPS servers from the current Raptor 10K RPM disks to Seagate Cheetah SA-SCSI 15k RPM drives.

SA-SCSI (Serial Attached Small Computer System Interface) is the gold standard in storage solutions for web servers requiring enterprise class robustness with high availability and fault tolerance features, especially where large databases and mission critical applications are involved. To ensure our clients are able to get the performance of a dedicated hardware at a fraction of its cost, we  have gone ahead and upgraded all our VPS clients to the new hardware without any additional expense and they are all delighted with the improved performance which is being delivered to their applications, as a result of this upgrade.

The SCSI HDDs coupled with the RAID hardware makes it a very stable and robust platform for hosting VMs on the Citrix Xen Server platform. Furthermore, we have also upgraded the Xen Server virtualization platform to its latest version (Xen Server ver 5.6) which is more stable and has several bug fixes implemented in its current verion. We have also added more storage space to our VPS hosting plans alongwith a higher monthly bandwidth allocation for no additional charges.

Bottom line is that if you are looking for a VPS or would like to host your application, website or mail server on a dedicated server platform, you will be hard pressed to find an offering which could better ours!

Revamped Diadem website is now online

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

Our new website is finally online. After about 3 months of planning and implementation, we have finally been able to put up our revamped site online. Though I might sound superstitious, I consider ourselves fortunate that the site has been launched on the same day when India celebrates  Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan which is an auspicious event for most Indians.

The updated site has had a major overhaul and following are the key changes implemented:

  • The backend CMS has been upgraded from Joomla1.x  to Joomla 1.5 which is considered to be the most popular CMS on the planet.
  • The site template is built from scratch and cannot be found anywhere else on the web. This gives our site a unique sense of distinction, unlike most other Joomla based websites which use free or commercial templates.
  • The site has a clean and uncluttered feel to it and we have placed special emphasis on the typography, navigation system and most importantly, meaningful and relevant content. We have dumped fancy javascripts, over the top graphics and animation which cry out for your attention in favour of a clean, simple and fast loading website.
  • New hosting plans (Windows and Linux) and upgraded VPS hosting plans have been launched with this site (more on this in our next post).
  • Pages are made SEO friendly to enable deeper indexing by search engines and more visibility for relevant organic searches on the search engines.

This is the fifth major revamp of our website over the past decade and it will be updated on a consistent basis with new services and offerings, so stay tuned with us!

Diadem Website Redux

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

After much procrastination, we have decided to take the leap and go ahead with revamping our primary website (www.diadem.co.in) with the following objectives in mind:

  • Revamp our key service sections and make it relevant to our current offerings (VPS, Value Added Hosting and Dedicated Servers).
  • Upgrade the CMS platform which is being used for the site backend to its current version.
  • Keep the UI of the site simpler with less graphics and color and a greater focus on providing relevant content to our users.
  • Enhanced navigation menu and other small tweaks across the site

Here is a preview of the last approved wireframe and we are aiming for a soft launch of our site by the end of July 2010.

This is going to be the fifth major revision of our site over the past decade and improving a large website like ours with just a couple of developers requires considerable planning, persistence and numerous obstacles to overcome before you can reap in its benefits. I am hopeful that the upcoming version would last us for atleast a couple of years before we rework it again and I will keep posting more updates as we make progress.

Backup Power Solution at our Workplace

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

power backup solution for diademThis year, I am expecting a power crisis in Kolkata for the following reasons:

  • Summer has crept in earlier this year and therefore ACs will start gobbling up energy sooner than expected.
  • Salt Lake, which was supposed to be a VIP area is not going to get preferential status with regards to power outages and would have to face the heat like the rest of the city.
  • Overall energy consumption has grown considerably over the past couple of years and would continue to soar. In comparison the supply of additional energy has crept at a slow pace and the deficit only seems to be widening.

Keeping the above factors in mind, we have invested in our own power backup solution, a Honda 2.8 KVA diesel powered generator which should keep our office humming with activity in the event of a power outage or “loadshedding” as its more commonly known in the city.

We were earlier planning to install a large rack of batteries with an online UPS but it was a relatively expensive solution with limited power backup availability. It would have also taken up additional storage space in our office along with periodic replacement of batteries, i.e. higher maintenance costs.

We arranged for a demo of the Honda generators and the Honda salesmen were very efficient and prompt in handling our request and provided us with a live demo which ensured that it would run our PCs and office equipment and scale up as our load increases. This little baby is also environment friendly with restricted CO2 emissions and low running noise, so it should keep our neighbors happy as well!

This is a small step in our continued efforts to ensure that our support services are available round the clock for your business :) .

Paypal remit problems for Indian firms and its broader implications

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Paypal has recently stopped allowing Indian providers to receive funds from other paypal account holders and it is also voiding the withdrawal of funds by Indian establishments to their Bank A/c’s in India. This is a double whammy by Paypal as most small to medium web dev shops and freelancers in India depend on Paypal for receiving payments from their clients abroad.

Also, the way Paypal has handled this situation is a bit appalling. Rather than intimating the Indian account holders in advance and assuring them of a resolution, they are first reversing the received funds back to the users and *than* informing the sellers of this issue.

While I am sure Paypal is working hard to resolve this issue as they have the financial strength and their brand image to safeguard, this raises some valid questions on how reliable are these online service providers in India. If this can happen to Paypal, what stops Gmail, Facebook and other such online providers from blocking access to their services to Indians?

As these firms are operated from outside India and are not governed by Indian laws and regulations, their failure to comply with any present and future law and regulations in India, might force them to rescind their services to their users in India.

My advice for avoiding such a situation from adversely impacting your business would be to read the fine print for all such online services which your business depends on and have a Plan B in place in case these services are unavailable one fine morning, as in the case of Paypal.

Update: The head of Paypal APAC region has posted an update on this issue, whch can be viewed at www.thepaypalblog.com.
There has been quite a bit of criticism for the post on Paypal, which can be viewed on the EvenHorizon1984 Blog.

Renovated Office at Diadem Technologies

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

Its been a while since we last updated our blog as we had been busy with some extensive repair and renovation work which we undertook within our office over the past month. Its been nearly a decade since we started our operations at the current premise and though we had undertaken some routine maintenance work every couple of hours, we felt the time was right to go in for a serious overhaul and roll up our sleeves.

Starting with a fresh coat of paint, new flooring, window blinds, carpentry and masonry work, we went on an overdrive to get everything completed before the New Year. Fortunately, the work progressed as planned and on Jan 01, 2010 we shifted back to our ‘Office 2.0′.

We are all extremely pleased with the results of our efforts and here are some pics of our revamped office for our clients and associates whom we may not have the good fortune to meet on a one to one basis.

Here are some takeaways which I gathered from this assignment:

  • Meet all the people who would work on this project (multiple times in advance) to ensure that they provide you with fixed quotes for the work and the scope of work has been agreed upon.
  • Keep a buffer of atleast 25% for time and cost overruns as some amount of scope creep is inevitable.
  • Ensure that all materials are bought in your presence (or someone you trust) to ensure that you get the right quality at a reasonable price.
  • Avoid contracting work to promoters as they tend to over inflate the cost by about 50% in comparison to working with individual specialists (carpenters, painters, etc.).
  • Create a project schedule (who will work on what and when) a week in advance and try to build in some amount of buffer between them. Create sub-tasks within a major task to break down all activities into small, unique tasks.
  • Pay on completion of agreed milestones.

My best wishes to you for a successful 2010 and at Diadem Tech we are excited with the opportunities and challenges which the New Year brings to us!
